Some More Babies
Because we need them!
AND because it’s a New Moon; so hey, let’s celebrate the newness all around us.
It’s been two months since I wrote about (and posted photos of) the piglets that had just been born at Teddy-the-Farmer’s place. In fact, it’s been all this time since I saw them again. Just as was the case when James was a little tyke back in December, I don’t know whether they are weaned yet.
You may recall that the little ones are, in fact, ‘piglets’ until they are weaned. And when they’re weaned, the technically become ‘shoats.’ Given their size as of Monday, I doubt all seven of them can be getting enough sustenance from their mom (and certainly not at the same time!), so it’s probably safe to consider them shoats.
I hadn’t walked all the way over to their pen for quite a while. I’ve been reluctant to disturb them – even though I was aching to see (and maybe even hold) some of them while they were still piglets.
But on Monday (August 10th), I finally caught sight of one of the little ones near the fence, and figured it would be ok to venture over and ‘see what I could see.’ I figured if I could see one of them, I might have some success of calling out more of them, so I gave it whirl.
They answered my call:
PERSPECTIVE! 10 August 2026.
As you can see, Pacha was really wanting to jump (or dig or in whatever way possible gain access) into their pen and PLAY! She was quite enthusiastic.
Brutus, on the other hand, while he did initially go up to the fence and exchange sniffs, quickly lost interest and was instead much more interested in going home. (It’s fascinating to see how different their personalities are.) I don’t know if he became intimidated when James and the sows came over – of if it was just a general, “Meh” on Brutus’s part.
If he was intimidated, I would blame him. It was quite a sight to see all these pigs/hogs rising up from wallowing in the tall grass so they could come over and say hi to us.
It’s hard to believe these little ones will be as big as James in just another six months or so.
I’ll try to walk without the dogs one day soon and see if I can get closer to them.

The shoats running to you are so cute!
